California dreamin': VW imagines its next campervan
Living the #vanlife with Volkswagen is about to get a lot more luxurious as the company reveals a concept version of its next California.
Described as “near-production” the California Concept is based on the long-wheelbase Multivan that was introduced in 2021. The extra length compared to previous versions makes it more spacious than ever, and that’s combined with a pop top that extends to almost two metres to provide a master suite with USB-C charging and LED lighting. Wide windows and a front opening let you enjoy a panoramic view of the great outdoors from the comfort of a king size bed.
The California’s rear passenger seat folds flat to create another double bed, which is even heated for chilly nights. The front seats can swivel round for dining on the fine fayre that can be whipped up in the the built-in kitchen. Cleverly the sink, fridge and induction hob can all be accessed from both inside and outside the vehicle and a bank of lithium-ion batteries provides off-grid power for several days. There’s plenty of storage for food and gear and even space to hide a composting toilet if you get caught short. An electric awning extends to provide an outside space protected from the elements.
The pop-top, lighting, heating and entertainment features of the van are all controlled by a tablet mounted inside, or smartphone app.
The California will be available next year with petrol, diesel or hybrid power, but not as a fully electric escape vehicle, as that’s the job of the ID. Buzz. Although VW hasn’t revealed plans for a camper version yet, we have already sampled an impressive aftermarket conversion.
