Detour Pit Stop #73: Pie Town, New Mexico, USA
Road tripping is an experience that’s as American as apple pie, so why not combine the two with a Pit Stop in Pie Town, New Mexico?
You’ll find Pie Town some two and half hours from Albuquerque on Highway 60 and when you reach it you’ll deserve something delicious after scaling the heady 7,778 ft height of the Continental Divide which is just two miles to the east. It’s the hikers and cyclists that will no doubt arrive most hungry, but even motorists and motorcyclists have a right to pie, having braved Highway 60.
Pie Town is tiny, with a population of just 186 pie lovers at the last census count. Until recently there were three restaurants serving America’s favourite food, and an annual Pie Festival, but now only Pie-o-neer Pies remains. Owner Sarah Chavez whips up around 150 pies per day, with the chilli-enhanced New Mexico Apple being the best-seller.
The town is a throwback to a more simple time, where you can wander the quiet streets of Key Lime Lane or Custard Street and take a break from the road or rest your weary limbs on a pause from the Continental Divide trail.
And eat pie, of course.
