The future of road trips doesn't need roads, says Audi
A new concept car from Audi takes electric overlanding to a stylish new level.
The activesphere prototype is a unique electric off-roader that combines sleek good looks with practical features to support adventurous exploration.
At first glance the activesphere appears to be just another jacked-up crossover coupe, albeit a handsome one. But at the touch of a button it can transform into a pickup truck with enough load space for a couple of mountain bikes. The roof even features a built-in ski rack for winter sports fun.
The car rides on chunky 22-inch wheels with special movable sections which can close to reduce drag on the highway and open up for off-road excursions. It’s a quattro, of course, which means that all four wheels are driven for maximum traction and the ride height can also be adjusted to scrabble over extreme terrain.
Powered only by electricity the activesphere has a range of over 370 miles and offers superfast recharging times thanks its 800-volt system. It’s been designed to be autonomous over long distances (on the road) and an entertaining exploration vehicle for drivers heading off the beaten path.
It’s just a concept for now, but offers up some exciting ideas for on and off-road travel in the future.
