Detour Pit Stop #44: Airstream Retreat, Devon, UK

An Airstream represents the shiny silver dream of a great American road trip. Or does it? For a Devon family it means sharing spectacular views with guests at one of Britain’s most distinctive bed and breakfasts.

Lucy and Rob Otton live in the stunning Teign Valley right on the edge of Dartmoor with their three kids and a 1976 Airstream Land Yacht which was renovated as part of the BBC TV show My Unique B&B.

Their Airstream Retreat overlooks the valley, and has been transformed into a luxurious off-grid hideaway complete with a fitted kitchen, bathroom and double bedroom . The huge deck provides further entertaining space with a firepit, barbecue and plenty of seating.

It’s the ideal base for a couple of days driving over Dartmoor, where the open moorland roads rise and fall rapidly enough to make your ears pop, the views are distractingly epic, and the wild ponies are wonderfully ambivalent to drivers, so try to keep your eyes on the road. Venture further north and you can find take on the fabulous Atlantic Highway before heading back for a well-deserved cocktail from the Airstream’s bar or a soak in the outdoor tub.
