Detour Pit Stop #47: Volo Cars, Illinois, USA

Imagine a car museum, packed with your favourite TV and movie machines, but where the exhibits are actually for sale. Well, that’s Volo Cars.

This dealership 50 miles north of Chicago, Illinois has a constant turnover of mostly American muscle and an attached museum which houses a vast collection of exhibits on vintage campers, military machines, cars of the rich and famous, and, notably, stars of the big and small screen.

You’ll find the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the Ghostbusters’ hearse, the terrifying Christine Plymouth Fury and many many more, alongside a host of other exhibits including racing cars, horse-drawn carriages and, er outboard motors. Basically if it involves internal combustion you’ll find it at the Volo musuem.

On the same site is the main dealership which sells almost every big block American machine you can think of. Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Vipers, they’re all there. And, if you’re lucky you’ll occasionally find a star car for sale as well. When we last looked a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria from Taxi starring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifa was being offered for just $29,998.

Bizarrely there’s also a large Jurassic Gardens dinosaur park on site, full of animatronic beasts from 65 million years ago. If you’re ever passing through Volo, Illiinois it’s definitely worth a pit stop.
