Detour Pit Stop #02: Cadillac Ranch, USA
Deep in the Texas panhandle, west of Amarillo, stands a line of 10 half buried Cadillacs, ranging, in chronological order, from a 1949 Club Coupe to a 1963 Sedan de Ville. They stand, noses down, rear wheels upended, tail fins pointing skywards towards Caddy heaven.
In 1974 a San Francisco collective of artists calling themselves ‘Ant Farm’ decided to create a unique open-air sculptural tribute to the Cadillac. ‘Cadillac Ranch’ may now be a rusting shadow of its former glory, but it's still worthy of an picture opportunity.
However, visitors can go a step further than take their picture next to the cars. In its early years, people would scratch their names into the paintwork of the cars, to leave their mark. But as the space ran out, others started to improvise and add decorations of their own, using cans of spray-paint. To this day, road-trippers shake n’ spray.
