Dream Garages

At Detour we love to dream. We dream of epic road trips and the vast collection of cars we’d pick from to take the longer way. And of course, we dream of the garages that we’d keep them in. Some lucky people get to live their dreams, combining their passion for automobiles with an eye for architecture. Maybe we could call it carchitecture?

Whether it’s a converted barn, a tower with a sky garage or an entire building designed by Porsche or Aston Martin, the garage has moved from being a purely functional add-on to become the centrepiece of stylish homes around the world.

In Japan Fujiwaramuro Architects created a gleaming white monolith to match the owner’s Maserati Granturismo which can be seen through a huge glass panel from the living area.

In Austin Texas Matt Fajkus designed a home around the owner’s impressive collection which includes Porsche, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. The garage structure is open and pillarless, has a built-in inspection ramp and can be viewed from the first floor. The main living area also cantilevers off the structure to provide a car port.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, a truly incredible home by Searchoffice features an entry that hides a whole gallery of cars beneath it and boasts a very special living centred around the owner’s Ferrari F40.

Are we jealous? Absolutely, but we’ll continue to dream – and buy our lottery tickets!
