Real life Mario Kart is coming to California

Your next California road trip won’t be complete without a pit stop for a Mario Kart race.

Opening in early 2023 at Universal Studios, Hollywood as part of a new Super Nintendo World attraction the augmented reality ride will let you lob virtual banana skins and hurtle through power-ups, collecting coins in a bid to beat Bowser.

“As part of Team Mario, guests will steer through courses underwater and in the clouds to compete for the Golden Cup while collecting coins to defeat Team Bowser and win,” says Universal.

A similar ride is already open in Tokyo where four-seater karts race on parallel tracks, with the riders wearing augmented reality goggles. Until recently you could also actually take a tour of Tokyo dressed up as Mario, Luigi, Toadette or almost any other character, although chucking fruit around was frowned upon.

And let’s not forget Rémi Gallard whose insane tribute to the world’s best-known kart-driving plumber broke the internet in 2008.
