Science says this is the ultimate American road trip

A data scientist has calculated the most efficient way tour the United States.

Dr Randal Olsen’s perfect road trip takes in all 48 contiguous states, visiting a key monument, theme park or landmark in each one and minimises the mileage to save fuel.

The route is 13,389 miles long and would take 214.56 hours or nine days to complete if you drove non-stop, although you’d miss out on all the fabulous planned pit stops which include national parks, museums, sporting venues and both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida.

In fact it was these pit stops that Olsen plotted first, before using an algorithm to determine the best route to tour each and every one in the most efficient way.

If you don’t have time for the full algorithmic American adventure Olsen has also calculated five more smaller road trips for the Midwest, the Northeast, the West Coast, Texas and Florida.
