When Harry Schoen was in the US Navy he discovered that he enjoyed the nomadic life, that he didn’t need a house to be happy and could live out of his kitbag. Now the 24-year-old is exploring the USA, driving and sleeping in his 2008 Porsche Cayenne.

Documenting his adventures on social media Harry is hoping to be able to keep his journey going indefinitely and has adapted his Porsche for life on and off the road.

The car sits on lifted suspension with chunky 33-inch all-terrain tyres and skid plates to tackle rock-crawling, but is otherwise mechanically standard. Inside he’s installed a utilitarian sleeping space with storage for his few clothes and other possessions as well as a bed big enough for his 6’5” frame. There’s an on-board generator, a small fridge, water supply and a roof mounted shower, plus a roof box to provide additional luggage space and a pull-out awning to provide a shade and shelter. Harry has also fitted extra lights so that his adventures needn’t stop when the sun sets.

A Porsche may seem a rather exotic choice for the #vanlife, and the fact that nobody else he know of has chosen to live in a Cayenne was certainly part of the reason Harry chose the car. However, it’s not been as expensive as you might think. Harry bought the Cayenne for just $9,000 and has spent about another $16,000 on making it liveable.

You can follow Harry’s travels on YouTube and Instagram. We wish him all the best.
