This concept car will let you star in your own road movie
To the delight of YouTubers worldwide Polestar has unveiled a sleek hardtop convertible that has an integrated drone to film you as you drive.
The O2 concept is a fully electric sports car with a mini heli-pad behind the rear seats so that its quad-copter buddy can be launched and landed even when the car is moving. Polestar engineers developed a clever aerofoil that raises behind the rear seats to create a calm area of negative pressure allowing the drone to take off when the car is on the move.
The aircraft is completely autonomous and can track the O2 at speeds of up to 90 km/h. It can be programmed with different filming modes to suit the road. For example, call “Action!” on an open coastal road and the drone can fly high to provide an atmospheric sequence, but on a more twisty route it could track closer to create a faster-feeling action clip.
When you’re ready to shout “Cut!” the drone will fly back to the car and land. You can even edit and share your road movie from the car’s 15-inch centre display.
“We wanted to emphasise the experience you can have with a car like the Polestar O2 in new and unusual ways,” says Polestar’s design boss Maximilian Missoni. “Integrating an autonomous cinematic drone was something that allowed us to push the boundaries on the innovation front. Not needing to stop and off-load the drone before filming, but rather deploying it at speed, is a key benefit to this innovative design.”
It sounds fun, but probably unlikely to outdo any of Detour’s Top 20 Road Trip Movies.
