Detour’s Creative Director Adrian Aldred gave himself a very special 40th birthday present with the help of Porsche.

I guess I could have had a Black Forest gateaux, but I went for a Black Forest drive instead.
— Adrian Aldred

“I realised that I’d got to the age of 40 without ever having driven a Porsche 911 so I decided to make amends. Because it was going to be my first time it was so important to me to do it in context. I flew out to Germany and took a train to Stuttgart. The station was literally outside the Porsche museum and there waiting for me was a 911 GTS convertible. Porsche had programmed the sat-nav with an amazing route through the forests.

I don't think I'd ever felt a car that was so suited to a pure driving experience. I felt completely connected to the car just after the first 45 minutes. I felt like I’d had it for years. It was just so planted and responsive.

I had four and a half hours behind the wheel and just didn’t stop once. The roads were so quiet there and getting to really enjoy the car, completely uninterrupted in the wilderness, was absolutely amazing.

When I returned to the museum I had a tour, including a behind the scenes look at the racing garage. So I was fully on-brand for the day. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it?”
