The Czech Republic is set to become one of the fastest countries in Europe as it introduces a new 150km/h (93mph) speed limit.
Only weeks since Spain implemented a similar measure on a motorway in Catalonia, the D3 motorway from Prague to the Linz corridor in Austria will start testing the new variable limit. In optimal weather conditions drivers will be able to press the pedal to the metal, but if the elements are against you then overhead gantries will indicate a lower speed.
After a trial period that will run until the end of September Czech authorities plan to follow up with the higher speed limit on a section of the motorway from Planá nad Lužnicí (Tábor) to České Budějovice. Raising the limits is expected to cost 55 million Czech Koruna or around £2 million, but, by cutting journey times, it’s believed that the economy will benefit.
When the new limits come into force only Germany’s unrestricted autobahns will be faster.
