Detour #23: Llanberis Pass , Wales
You can literally drop a pin on a map of Wales at random and find an amazing driving road. From scenic routes like the Coastal Way to the thrill of Rally GB special stages, the topography never fails to deliver automotive excitement. The A4086 Llanberis Pass in the heart of Snowdonia is no exception.
The picturesque but unpronounceable Betws-y-Coed is a gateway to all manner of outdoor activities, from hiking, climbing and mountain biking to surfing man-made waves at the nearby Adventure Parc Snowdonia. But driving is what Detourists go for, so head west on the A5 following the river until you reach Capel Curig where the A4086 begins.
You will skirt the twin lakes of Llyannau Mymbyr on this fast and flowing section before veering right and beginning the climb to Pen-y-Pass. The curves are open and the sight lines clear with views of the valley below. At the 1,180 ft peak there’s a youth hostel and restaurant - and accompanying traffic, so take care. Or take a break and enjoy the view before beginning the descent.
The way down to Llanberis is altogether more demanding. With gravity boosting your performance you’ll test your brakes for corners that are tighter than they first appear and straights that pass in a blur. Driven with enthusiasm it’s only a matter of minutes until you’re back down to sea level at Lyn Peris lake and entering Llanberis.
So do what Detour did. Turn around and do it all again. Better still, book a night at the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel, just as Sir Edmund Hilary once did, and use it as your base for exploring more of Snowdonia.
