Detour Pit Stop #09 ~ Kessler's Kulm Hotel, Davos

If you’ve read Detour’s guides to the Flüela and Furka Passes, you’re probably already packing your bags for a Swiss Alps driving adventure. And there’s no better place to base yourself than Kessler’s Kulm Hotel Wolfgang on the outskirts of Davos.

The hotel is moments from the start of the Flüela Pass, with the very best of Swiss driving all within reach. In just a few days your could tick off ten or more of the best driving roads in Europe and return each night to a comfy bed, a spa and a sausage that’s fit for a (future) king. According to the hotel’s owner, whenever he’s skiing in in nearby Klosters Prince Charles pops in to the restaurant for a meat feast.

There are suites that will make you feel like royalty or, across the road, a bunk house that’s been designed for bikers. It’s basic, but spotlessly clean in the way only a Swiss hotel can be and means you can spend more money on V-Power at the conveniently located Shell garage next door.

Detour visited in early summer and had an amazing series of drives, getting up before dawn to tackle the roads at their emptiest, then sneaking back for an early afternoon snooze before heading out again.

We’ll be back.
