Detour Pit Stop #18: Fuel Coffee House, West Sussex, UK

Maybe it’s the polished mechanical beauty, hiss and gurgle of the espresso machines. Or maybe it’s the caffeine hit that goes with the adrenalin shot of driving. But whatever the reason cars and coffee have found their natural synergy and auto-themed cafes are cropping up everywhere.

Fuel Coffee House is a small but stylish setup on an industrial estate north of Worthing that came to life after the Golding Barn Garage became an accidental hub for car fans. The number of people coming to watch their cars being worked on, or to simply hang out with fellow enthusiasts was getting out of control, so the owners opened the coffee house.

When Detour paid a visit early one Monday morning we were the only customers, but soon muddy cyclists coming down off the nearby Devil’s Dyke were keeping the espresso machine active. A pair of MGs arrived, followed by a Gallardo and a 360 Modena in tandem, while car club meets regularly see 200 or more vehicles filling every available space in the industrial estate.

Unlike Caffeine and Machine Fuel Coffee House doesn’t serve hot food, but the pastries are delicious.

Pay a visit and tell them Detour sent you – you may even get your car on the Fuel Wall.
