First-timers and old-timers team up for the Generations Rally

A family-friendly classic car rally in England’s Lake District brought young and old together on the region’s most challenging and scenic roads.

The first ever Generations Rally from Rally the Globe saw 75 cars compete in a three-day jaunt taking in the most delightful drives in Cumbria, The Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. Uniquely, the rules stated that each two-person crew member had to be from a different generation, opening up classic rallying to competitors as young as 13. Some 50 of the entrants were aged under 30 and rally enthusiasts travelled from France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and the USA to take part.

Among the highlights were Detour favourites including the hair-raising Honister Pass and the picture perfect North Pennines. A speed test on the Rowrah kart circuit was thrown in to the mix as well.

“It was just a terrific event,” said Fred Gallagher, Rally the Globe’s Rally Director. “The Generations concept proved to be a real winner on all fronts. So many parents were clearly not only thrilled to be sharing their passion for these motoring adventures with their children but also delighted to be spending such quality time together.

“It was also impressive to see just how quick and agile young minds are at coming to grips with processing information and multi-tasking often under stress and at speed. Many have already caught the rallying bug and are super-keen to be given another opportunity to put their newly gained skills to the test. And that, after all, was what Generations was all about.”
