From Pit to Pitlane: Old Aussie Coal Mine to become Race Resort
A former coal mine in New South Wales, Australia will soon be transformed into a luxury race resort.
Rhondda Colliery in the Hunter region, about 150 miles from Sydney, is set to become the first dedicated petrolhead paradise Down Under. Named the Black Rock Motor Resort the venue will be home to a go-kart track, driver training facility and, most importantly, a huge circuit penned by Formula 1 track designer Hermann Tilke, that will follow the unique topography of the site.
Like other race resorts, Black Rock will have a swanky clubhouse and a number of homes overlooking the circuit, complete with extensive garage facilities for petrolheads to store their collections.
The project is expected to cost AU$95 million and, having been approved in 2019, construction has now begun with completion expected within two years.
Black Rock Motor Resort founder Tony Palmer says: “We've got 100,000 active participants in motor clubs or car clubs around the country and they don't have a home. We want this to be their home, we want them to come here and enjoy their passion with like-minded individuals.”
