Recharge with a desktop drive on Slow Roads

Slow Roads is a driving game with a difference. Speed is not of the essence here, simply cruising through the endless English countryside is the goal of this relaxing desktop Detour.

Developer anslo says, “This project is a nostalgic love letter to the rolling hills of the Peak District, and to the arcade rally games I would play for hours on end as a child.”

To that end anslo has programmed a never-ending road that winds through the hills which can be driven in a choice of three electric vehicles, a Polestar-like car, a futuristic motorcycle or even a coach.

The vehicles have an 8-bit simplicity to their design, but the scenery is elegantly rendered and you can choose different times of day or change the seasons to vary your drive.

It takes a little time to master using the keyboard controls and, as the name suggests, it’s definitely easier to take it slow, and simply enjoy the views and soothing whine of the vehicles. You can even set auto drive and just sit back watch.

Slow Roads “lets you disconnect from life for a while and run endlessly toward the distant horizon,” adds anslo.

On a rainy day when you’re stuck at your desk and dreaming of the open road it’s a great escape.
