The Best of British Road Trips
Detour has joined forces with route-planning app MIVIA to share our favourite driving roads with an even wider car community.
Among the first of the growing list of routes are ten of the Best of British drives, and by using the MIVIA app you can access accurate turn-by-turn instructions for each one – absolutely free.
Just download the app and search for ‘Detour’ and you’ll find a full description and route guidance for each of the brilliant British road trips below. We’ve also added international routes including French Fancies, A Taste of Italy, Sensational Switzerland and American Dream Drives.
Here’s what to expect in the Best of British collection:
Black Mountain Pass
There's a good reason Britain's car magazines and YouTubers head to Wales so often to create content. The Black Mountain Pass over the Brecon Beacons ticks all the necessary boxes. There’s fabulous scenery (when the weather is kind), smooth asphalt with a heady mix of tight twists and open corners and relatively easy access.
The Jim Clark Trail
Jim Clark was the greatest Formula 1 driver of his generation and if you want to find out why then you’ll need to follow in his wheeltracks.
Zig Zag Hill – The Bendiest Road in Britain
On the Dorset-Wiltshire border you'll find the bendiest road in Britain. For around three quarters of a mile the B3081 is so twisty and tortuous that it exerts similar g-forces on a car driver to those a rollercoaster does on its rider.

Morgan’s Malvern
To experience the joy of motoring in days gone by you don’t have to buy a Morgan: you can explore the region where the company has had its roots for more than a century. And, as luck would have it, there are some cracking roads to enjoy along the way.
Buttertubs Pass
Jeremy Clarkson’s favourite English road is quite the ride. It’s full of whoops, drops and twists like a fairground ride. "It’s England’s only spectacular road,” according to the Top Gear and Grand Tour legend.
New Forest, Old Cars
It’s good to take your foot off the pedal once in a while. To slow down and take in the surroundings instead of watching them rush by in a blur, and a drive across the New Forest will force you to do just that as you make your way to the fabulous Beaulieu Motor Museum.
The Atlantic Highway
“Atlantic Highway” is perhaps something of an exaggeration. The A39 from Porlock to Barnstaple is a winding single carriageway, but it most definitely delivers on the Atlantic part of its name, with stunning views across the ocean.
Britain’s Most Haunted Highway
Flying monks and leaping ghouls are just some of the frights that await those who dare to drive the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass.
Rosedale Chimney Bank - The Steepest Road in England
Try not to cook your clutch on this vertiginous vehicular adventure which hits a gradient of one in three at its most extreme.
The Road to Skyfall
We spy a drive inspired by one of the most memorable scenes in 007 history. It’s right here that Bond and M pause for thought before the final showdown with Raoul Silva in Skyfall.
