Walter Röhrl, World Rally Champion

After taking the World Rally Championship title twice Walter RörHl has had an incredible career at porsche, working behind the scenes as a development driver.

At the age of 78 Röhrl shows no signs of slowing down. From behind the wheel of a Porsche Carrera GT hypercar that he helped bring to the road 25 years ago, he told Detour it’s the open road, not the race circuit or rally stage that brings him the most driving pleasure. Having driven more than 50,000km in the Carrera GT Röhrl says he will never tire of getting behind the wheel.

The Carrera GT, on a on a twisty road in the Dolomites, that is the maximum for me.
— Walter Röhrl

“I prefer open roads, not anymore the race track. This car on a on a twisty road in the Dolomites, that is the maximum for me.

Last October I was with 10 Carrera GTs and eight 918 customers for three days in the Dolomites. Every day we drove about about 300 kilometres. And it was unbelievable, this one is absolutely my favourite car. The normally aspirated engine, every millimetre of acceleration, you can position the car in the right direction.

You don't see this car, not very often on the road. In my life, I only have seen one or two on the open road. But still, if people see it's really fantastic.

I would like to make cars like this also today, because modern cars are so complicated, full of electronics that the driver has no connection anymore to the car. This car is completely different. If I have to choose a car for my life, I would always choose this one.”
