How to road trip across America in perfect weather

Preparing for a continent-crossing road trip just got a bit easier. Thanks to the calculations of a climate scientist it’s now possible to drive across the USA without getting too hot or too cool.

Alaska-based Brian Brettschneider has calculated a year-long series of routes across North America where the temperature is always around a pleasant 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Centigrade. It’s certainly a popular idea as Brettschneider reckons previous versions of his maps have been shared 20 million times!

“I have been contacted numerous times over the years since from people who want to bike or drive the trip. It has resonated with people in a way I never imagine,” he says.

Brettschneider worked out that if you start in Florida in January you could finish in California at the end of December and never have to pack a jumper.

Alternatively you could take a 7,000-mile central tour that begins in Texas at the beginning of the year and then be in California in time to see in the new year. Brettschneider has also devised a combination of the two, together with an even longer route that takes in Alaska and Canada.

No matter which set of directions you follow you’ll be able to travel light and enjoy a temperate trip.

Full details of Brettschneider’s routes are here.
