Detour Pit Stop #92: Inkie's Smokehouse, Cornwall, UK

Inkie's Smokehouse

A deep south American diner in the depths of the Cornish countryside?

Pulling into the car park at the Golitha Falls nature reserve near Liskeard in Cornwall you’d expect many things - the chirping of birds perhaps, or the sound of the River Fowey making its way through the wooded valley. What you might not expect is the heady aroma of barbecued meats, pit smoked pulled pork, beef brisket and barbecued chicken, wafting between the parked cars.

And yet there it is, Inkie’s Smokehouse BBQ restaurant, a deep south American dining experience in the middle of the Cornish countryside. A less likely location would be hard to imagine and yet it fits perfectly, to the point that you start to wonder why more rural car parks aren’t offering freshly made Arkansas pancakes and cherry pie waffles from a rustic shack

With everything made fresh on the premises at Inkie’s - they even cure and hand slice their own bacon - you might be expecting to pay a premium, and yet the prices are staggeringly good. A Tennessee bap filled with Carolina slaw, homemade sauces and pork shoulder, smoked for over 20 hours and pulled to order, will set you back just £9, and the breakfast prices are even more reasonable. The Georgia style pancakes with house made spiced peaches and cream are only £5.50 and an utter delight. Time it right and you might even be able to get your hands on some of their famous Inkie’s small batch moonshine, with flavours including cinder toffee and charred maple.

Popular with tourists and locals alike, Inkie’s can get busy, but all of the five star reviews say the wait was absolutely worth it. Get there for breakfast when they open at 10am and you can beat the rush and grab the best seats.

Dog-friendly, great prices and a beautiful walk to boot, Inkie’s Smokehouse is definitely a pit stop worth making a detour for.
