The Mille Miglia is motoring into Miami

As it closes in on its centenary, the legendary Mille Miglia is adding Florida to its rally roster.

First run in Italy, from Rome to Brescia and back in 1927, the 1,000-mile open road race had taken place some 24 times by 1957. During those 30 years it became notorious as one of the most dangerous events in the world, with 56 people losing their lives. The 1957 race was its deadliest with 11 people killed as a Ferrari lost control and crashed into a crowd of spectators. Understandably the Mille Miglia was cancelled after this tragedy.

When the event returned in 1977 it was a regularity competition, so drivers no longer needed to go flat out for the 1,000 miles - although, based on model David Gandy’s experience it’s still a spectacular and speedy event.

More recently the organisers have expanded beyond the borders of Italy, holding events in the United Arab Emirates and the USA. From October 31 to November 5, 2023 a three-day “Warm Up” will be held in and around Washington DC, while in 2024 the Mille Miglia will make its way to Miami.

All Mille Miglia events are open two classic cars split into two main categories: 1000 Miglia Era for cars built during the original event’s heyday up to 1957, and those built later.
