The new Ford Explorer will live up to its name on a round-the-world adventure
An intrepid young adventurer has just set off to circumnavigate the globe in Ford’s first fully-electric SUV.
Lexie Alford is already the youngest person to have visited every country in the world and will be heading back to 30 countries, travelling more than 17,000 miles in 100 days.
Her journey is inspired by pioneering driver Aloha Wanderwell who became the first woman to drive around the world over 100 years ago. Her progress, in a 1918 Ford Model T was rather slower, however, taking five years to complete. To be fair Wonderwell did travel over 500,000 miles and visit 80 countries on her epic drive.
Back then getting fuel in the remotest regions was a major challenge and Aloha’s Ford was pulled by oxen in India and people in China. Lexie could face problems of her own maintaining a charge in the all-electric Explorer.
“This is an epic adventure, but a tough one. It will be tough on the Explorer and with the amount of time on the road alone it will be tough on me and the support crew,” says Lexie. “Any adventure worth having should challenge you though, and I can’t wait to explore the new places and meet incredible people to find out how they’re trying to make their corners of the world better.”
You can follow Lexie’s journey by searching #ChargeAroundTheGlobe or following @lexielimitless and we’ll keep tabs on her progress here at Detour as well.
