This electric car is set to drive from Pole to Pole

The electric Nissan Ariya that will take British adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey on a 17,000-mile drive from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole is almost ready to roll.

The car is currently undergoing major modifications including raised suspension, and widened wheelarches to swallow fat off-road tyres which will help it cope with some of the harshest terrain on the planet.

The drive will take the husband and wife team through 14 countries, starting in the very north of Canada, then through the USA and South America, rather like a reverse run of Tim Cahill’s Road Fever. However, instead of calling it quits in Tierra del Fuego the duo and their car will board a ship to Antarctica for the final and most treacherous leg of the trip over the icefields.

The adventure, which aims to raise awareness of the climate crisis, will also be the most extreme test of an electric car – and how to charge it – the world has ever seen. The finished car will be revealed in February before the Ramseys set off in March.

“Daring to do what others don’t, Nissan and the team of extreme pioneers at Pole to Pole are pushing the limits of electric mobility, accelerating towards a cleaner, safer, more inclusive world. In undertaking and completing this ambitious expedition, we hope to reach and inspire action in others all around the world, demonstrating the prowess of electric vehicles and speeding up adoption as part of the solution to reducing global emissions", said Clíodhna Lyons, Nissan’s Region Vice President Product and Services Planning.
