Carchitecture for your Coffee Table

Carchitecture USA – American Houses with Horsepower is a celebration of the historic link between architecture and the automobile.

The gloriously-illustrated 192-page tome is a follow-up to 2021’s Carchitecture which took a more global view of the intersection between homes and cars. This time Thijs Demeulemeester and Bert Voet’s focus is purely on America as they explore the country with camera and notebook.

In six chapters - Iconic Houses, California Dreaming, Classical Gaz, Match my Façade, Wheels of Fortune and Carchitecture Now – and five essays, the reader “discovers the wonderful interplay of architecture and car design.”

At each building the authors have artfully positioned a car that complements the architecture. Outside Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1955 Turkel House in Detroit, for example, sits a Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia, while a 1930s Peugeot-Darl’mat 402 is perfectly parked beside Wagner House in West Palm Beach, Florida, designed by Belford Shoumate.

As the great Frank Gehry once said “Architecture and car design are both about creating functional spaces that inspire and enhance the human experience.” This book is clear proof of that.

Carchitecture USA is available now from publishers Lannoo priced at €45.
