Internet Road Trip

Thousands of road trip enthusiasts are driving the same ‘car’ across the continental United States on an epic user-generated internet Detour.

Pay a visit to the Internet Road Trip and you can join in the fun of this virtual journey using Google street view. Every ten seconds there’s a vote to decide which way to go, while online roadtrippers can also interact through a Discord-powered chat or by honking the horn.

A map in the bottom left corner of the screen shows the current location and users can click on direction arrows or turn the steering wheel to vote on which turn to take next. It’s a democratic Detour with the majority decision being followed.

Each stage of the road trip is accompanied by music from a local radio station. The Internet Road Trip began in early May in Boston, USA and when Detour joined over 500 back seat drivers to have a ‘drive’ the community had already steered more than 2000 miles into Canada.

Developer Neal Agarwal told 404 Media: “I think communal experiences on the internet are so fun, especially when there’s some shared goal. I’ve had the idea of ‘Twitch plays self-driving car’ for a long time, but that’s probably not street legal so this is the next best thing.”

With an average pace of just 3mph this is a road trip that could keep going forever.

Or at least until the Internet gets bored.
