Curvature app finds the best driving roads for you
A bike-riding software engineer has devised a way to rank roads according to how entertaining they are to drive.
Adam Franco created Curvature to help fellow enthusiasts seek out driving fun. The website generates a map highlighting the twistiest roads in the world, by analysing the geometry of each road segment, and giving it a score from zero to over 10,000. The higher the number, the bendier the road is.
Roads with a ranking of 300 or less will have a few corners to liven things up, but are mostly straight. Up to 1,000 you’ll find more linked turns. Get above 3,000 and you’ll find corner after corner for miles and miles. Anything over 10,000 will offer “mile upon mile of twists and turns.”
To help easily pick out the most entertaining drives Curvature’s map is colour-coded. Green represents wide, large radius corners, yellow suggests sweepers, and where orange and red appear you’ll find serious switchbacks. There’s also a detailed explanation of the maths that makes driving fun, along with a guide on how to use the tool in conjunction with other mapping solutions to plan your next drive.
Curvature is completely free to use, but, if you like it, then you can support Franco’s efforts through a donation.
